My name Charles Marcus and I am the founder of TDMEC. Here at TDMEC we have two missions. The first is to provide free music lessons for children of Dickinson, Tx. The second is to provide free instruments for those kids that remain in our program and continue on by enrolling in the band program offered at Dickinson ISD in the 6th grade. In order to participate the single income family cannot be higher than $50,000 a year and the dual income family cant be above $80,000. Our reason for choosing this income amount is simple. My son has been a member of Dickinson ISD since the 6th grade and as a one income family it was challenging to provide my son everything he needed to do something he loved, but as parents we make a way despite the challenges we face.
I wasn't sure if I should share the triggering even that moved me to found this organization but in the end I felt that it is necessary that I share this with everyone. There was an accident along a busy street in a Dickinson neighbor with no sidewalks and no streetlights for safety or visibility where a wonderful young lady lost her life due a hit and run driver. This young lady was a member of the Dickinson H.S. marching band. I did not know what I could do to honor her memory but I had to do something. As I focused on what I could do I thought on her life as young person doing what she loved in band and living in an area that has been left behind along with its residents. So I came up with a way to offer other kids in these areas the opportunity develop a love for music the way this young lady did and the way my son has. As a result The Dickinson Music Enrichment Center was conceived.
The Reformationist Martin Luther said that Next to the Word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. Here at TDMEC we truly believe in this statement and what better way to bring improvement and joy to the most precious treasure we have than to offer or children an opportunity to participate in music for free.
